These peer support groups, advocacy groups, and public policy agencies can help clients learn more about mental health and co-occurring disorders.

Peer support

Alcoholics Anonymous
AA is a Twelve Step fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

Al-Anon Family Groups
Al-Anon is a Twelve Step fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength, and hope in order to solve their common problems.

Double Trouble in Recovery
DTR is a Twelve Step fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope so that they may help others recover from addiction and manage their mental disorders. 

Dual Diagnosis Anonymous
DDA is a peer support group based on an authorized version of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous plus an additional 5 Steps that focus on dual diagnosis. (The program is apparently active only in Oregon now.)

Dual Recovery Anonymous
DRA is an independent, nonprofessional, Twelve Step fellowship for people with a dual diagnosis.

Emotions Anonymous
EA is a Twelve Step fellowship of people who come together to work toward recovery from emotional difficulties.

Los Angeles Recovery Guide
Complete Aftercare Support Team (CAST) helps individuals transition into independent living and long-term recovery after an inpatient treatment program or relapse. CAST's Los Angeles Recovery Guide is a comprehensive directory of sober events in the Los Angeles area.

Narcotics Anonymous
NA is a Twelve Step fellowship of men and women for whom drugs had become a major problem. Membership is open to all drug addicts, regardless of the particular drug or combination of drugs used.

Nar-Anon Family Groups
Nar-Anon is a Twelve Step program designed to help relatives and friends of addicts recover from the effects of living with an addicted relative or friend.

Education and advocacy

Anxiety Disorders Association of America
ADAA is dedicated to informing the public, health care professionals, and media that anxiety disorders are real, serious, and treatable.

Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center
The PRC conducts interdisciplinary research on services for individuals who have serious mental illness. It specializes in developing effective interventions under research conditions, then translating these interventions into actual mental health service practices and evaluating their effectiveness in routine practice settings.

Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance
DBSA provides tools and information to help people living with mood disorders. The organization works to ensure that people living with mood disorders are treated equitably.

Dual Diagnosis Recovery Network
The Dual Diagnosis Recovery Network advocates for better treatment standards for individuals with co-occurring disorders. The organization works with chemical dependency, mental health, consumer and family advocacy organizations to educate and publicize the need for more services that are appropriate for co-occurring disorders.

Karla Smith Foundation
KSF provides hope for a balanced life to family and friends of anyone with a mental illness or who lost a loved one to suicide.

Mental Health America
Mental Health America is the country's leading nonprofit dedicated to helping ALL people live mentally healthier lives. MHA members include people who have been personally affected by mental illness and addiction, their family members, and mental health professionals, public policy advocates, and researchers.

MindFreedom International
MFI is an independent nonprofit coalition defending human rights and promoting humane alternatives for mental and emotional well being.

National Alliance on Mental Illness
NAMI is a grassroots organization dedicated to the eradication of mental illnesses and to the improvement of the quality of life for people who are affected by mental illnesses.

National Empowerment Center, Inc.
The mission of the National Empowerment Center Inc. is to carry a message of recovery, empowerment, hope and healing to people who have been labeled with mental illness.

National Mental Health Consumers' Self-Help Clearinghouse
The National Mental Health Consumers' Self-Help Clearinghouse works to foster consumer empowerment through its web site, up-to-date news and information announcements, a directory of consumer-driven services, electronic and printed publications, training packages, and individual and onsite consultation.

Public health and policy

Army Behavioral Health
This Web site provides resources and information regarding mental well-being for Soldiers and their family members. Provided by the U.S. Army Medical Department, it is intended for interested Soldiers, family members, the public, news media and Army Medical Department Beneficiaries.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administraion
A division of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, SAMHSA provides information on prevention, publications, treatment facilities, providers, and statistics concerning addiction and mental health.

National Association for Rural Mental Health
NARMH is a professional organization that serves the field of rural mental health. NARMH's membership includes the entire spectrum of the rural mental health community: consumers, family members, practitioners, administrators, educators, researchers, and policy makers.

Mental Healthcare Reform
MentalHealthcareReform.org is designed to help community mental health and addictions providers, staff, consumers, and advocates understand the impact of the new law on the U.S. behavioral health system.

National Institute on Drug Abuse
NIDA's mission is to bring the power of science to bear on drug abuse and addiction. It supports research and the wide communication of the findings to significantly improve prevention, treatment and policy as it relates to drug abuse and addiction.

WHO's Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse
The Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse of The World Health Organization (WHO) provides leadership and guidance for the achievement of two broad objectives: (a) closing the gap between what is needed and what is currently available to reduce the burden of mental disorders worldwide, and (b) promoting mental health.
